Archeology: what has with humanity happened in the past?  Archaeology is the scientific study of past human life and culture through the analysis of material remains, such as tools, buildings, art, and landscapes.

It interprets these artifacts to understand how people lived, behaved, and changed over time, bridging the humanities and social sciences to reconstruct history. 

Of course, dating methods are highly suspect and when it comes to geology is circular.  

if we are able to determine something that is found as to its specific nature (what it is) we are doing pretty good; if we can figure out when it was that is fantastic but about the only way we could really know is if we were to discover a date printed or stamped or carved somewhere.   Other dating methods cannot be trusted.
