The Seven Pillars of God's Book
Revelation
God's revelation refers to the ways in which God has chosen to disclose Himself, His Word and His will to humanity. This concept is foundational to understanding the nature of God, His purposes, and His interactions with the world. Revelation is generally categorized into two types: general revelation and special revelation.
Revelation is something that happens between God and man. It is God speaking (or revealing something) to a person whether it be through an agent such as an angel or a dream or a vision. Any of these would be considered atype of special revelation from God.
Inspiration
Inspiration (in the sense we mean here) means God is speaking through a person. The literal meaning is related to breathing or breath. When we speak air comes out of our mouths. Inspiration is often used commonly to refer to something that is akin to motivation. That is not what is meant when we say the Bible is inspired by God. We mean God told us these things.
Preservation
Preservation of the Bible refers to God keeping the original media on which they were originally recorded and copied or written down as well as God maintaining the scripture currently. Preservation extends to translation work, too. God did promise to preserve his word -- however he did not promise to preserve it in every language.
Illumination
Illumination refers to awakening the minds of people and enabling them to understand the Scriptures. Understanding the Scriptures requires the assistance of the Holy Spirit. Frequently people will say that they received an inspiration or a revelation and what they really mean is they have received an illumination. Illumination refers to the opening of the mind to understanding.
When things are dark we light a lamp or a candle or we turn on a light. This enables us to see things more clearly. It is God (His Holy Spirit) that illuminates us so we can understand the Scriptures.
The Bible is a spiritual book. It cannot be properly understood apart from the Holy Spirit's help.
Interpretation
Interpretation has to do with what do the scriptures mean. What the scriptures say we get simply by reading but what do the scriptures mean can be difficult and must be properly interpreted. A scriptural passage may have many applications but it only has one correct interpretation.
Application
Application has to do with how a person is going to react or attempt to implement what they have learned from the scriptures. How is what you've learned going to impact your life? This question reveals the essence of application.
Publication
Publication refers to the sharing of God's word with others. One can publish something by copying it to reproduce it and distribute it or by verbally pronouncing it. This can even be done simply through living life in a Godly way.
