Here we are discussing the pitiful, top, number one rival of the most high God,  who once held an exalted place in heaven.  It seems he may have been heaven's brightest star,  yet he is a created thing and is no match for the Most High God.    God has no equal or rival.  In case you're reading this my adversary, the Lord rebuke you.

Lucifer, also known as the Devil, the Adversary, and the Deceiver ...

In the passage below from Isaiah chapter 14, we find the only place in the King James Version that you will find the word Lucifer.

The Bible gives us the names of two of God's archangels, Michael and Gabriel. We are not given the name of God's number one enemy anywhere explicitly in the Bible.  It is not likely that Lucifer is his actual given name.

The word Lucifer literally means light-bringer, light-bearer, or morning star.  It is not originally a Hebrew or Greek word, but a Latin noun created by combining two distinct Latin elements: Lux (genitive lucis): meaning "light."Ferre: a verb meaning "to bring" or "to bear."

Isa. 14:9-18

[9] Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
[10] All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us?
[11] Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.
[12] How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
[13] For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
[14] I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
[15] Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
[16] They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;
[17] That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?
[18] All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house.

Why is Lucifer called so many different names?

He is called by different names because of what he does.

He was the deceiver in the Garden of Eden.  In Genisis he has identified as the serpent.  As the deceiver, he causes man to question the Word of God. He does this by twisting and distorting God's word and by directly lying to man.  

He tries to convince man that God is not being good to him. Distrusting and disobeying God will bring nothing good to man. If God's enemy succeeds and deceiving man, he can bring man into his camp.

Gen. 3:1-7

[1] Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
[2] And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
[3] But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
[4] And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
[5] For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
[6] And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
[7] And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

The word devil comes from the Greek word diabolos (διάβολος), which literally means slanderer or accuser.

He has slandered and accused men before God.  Job was the best man on the earth in his day and Satan accused him before God.

Job 1:6-11

[6] Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
[7] And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
[8] And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
[9] Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
[10] Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
[11] But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.

The word satan comes from the Hebrew word śāṭān (שָׂטָן), which literally means adversary, resister, or one who opposes.

He hates the men that God created in His own image and continually opposes them and resists them.

Zech. 3:1-5

[1] And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.
[2] And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?
[3] Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel.
[4] And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.
[5] And I said, Let them set a fair mitre upon his head. So they set a fair mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the LORD stood by. 

Who was he?

He was created as the covering, anointed cherub.  In Ezekiel he has referred to as the king of Tyrus.

Ezek. 28:11-19

[11] Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
[12] Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.
[13] Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
[14] Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
[15] Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
[16] By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
[17] Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.
[18] Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.
[19] All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.

His position in heaven

The picture that is painted for us about The Throne of God in the Bible is this: about the throne are the seraphim (Isa. 6:1-4); the cherubim (Ezek.1 & 10); and beasts or living creatures that combine the elements of both (Rev.4). Lucifer's position was above the throne of God.

He was the most intelligent and most beautiful creature that God made, and as a result the most powerful, too. Like every other created thing that God made he had free will. Being filled with pride, he wanted God's throne and he wanted to be worshiped. H e wanted to have a throne above the throne of God. He wanted to supplant God. He deceived himself before he ever deceived anyone else.

Because of his sin he lost his place in heaven, and he was cast down to the Earth. we see him as the form of the serpent in the Garden of Eden tempting man to rebel against God.

At his creation, he held the top place in heaven as far as created things go.

The god of This World

The Most High God created man to be the King on the Earth. Adam who is also called the son of God and was the original god of this world.  He lost his headship of earth by right of conquest when he rebelled against the Creator by following the serpent's deception.

2 Cor.4:3-4

[3] But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
[4] In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

The first man Adam was the first son of God on the earth. What he lost in the garden was retaking by the second Adam: Jesus Christ the son of God and son of man.  

Man's dominion on the earth was given, captured and recovered. Now in Christ, we are the inheritors of the earth and currently have dominion here through what Jesus Christ has done. We are priests and kings on the earth in his kingdom which will never end.

The Great Red Dragon

This is the final description that we get of God's Great enemy in the Bible. In Revelation he is described as the great red dragon.  Such was his influence among the heavenly host that a third of the stars of Heaven (spirit beings) were cast to the earth because of him.

Rev. 12:1-17

[1] And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
[2] And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
[3] And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
[4] And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
[5] And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
[6] And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
[7] And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
[8] And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
[9] And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
[10] And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
[11] And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
[12] Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
[13] And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.
[14] And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
[15] And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.
[16] And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
[17] And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

First to Rebel, Last to be Finally Judged

Rev. 20:7-10

[7] And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
[8] And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
[9] And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.
[10] And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

This is the great enemy's unhappy ending.
