His Covenants
There are eight different covenants that God has made with men: the Edenic Covenant, Adamic Covenant, Noahic Covenant, Abrahamic Covenant, Mosaic Covenant, Priestly Covenant, Davidic Covenant, and the New Covenant.
The biblical covenants collectively reveal the depth of God’s commitment to humanity. They move from an initial promise of deliverance in Eden, to global assurances in Noah’s day, to the specific familial and national covenants with Abraham and Moses, to the royal line through David, and finally to the universal, eternal salvation made possible by the New Covenant in Christ.
Rooted in Scripture and underscored by historical and archaeological findings, these covenants form an unbroken thread weaving through the entire Bible. They lay a comprehensive foundation for understanding God’s unchanging character, humanity’s moral responsibilities, and the ultimate hope of redemption.
His Covenants (the two Covenants): God made two covenants with Israel. The first Covenant and the final Covenant. The Old Covenant and the New Covenant.
One was started on stone and completed on paper. The other was written into human hearts.
What is a Covenant?
It is a formal, solemn, and binding agreement or compact. It is a written agreement or promise usually under seal between two or more parties especially for the performance of some action.
In the Bible, a covenant (Hebrew: berit; Greek: diathēkē) is a holy, legally binding relationship established between God and humanity by a solemn oath. While modern contracts involve an exchange of property or services ("this is yours and that is mine"), a biblical covenant involves an exchange of persons ("I will be your God, and you will be My people"). It is a permanent, relational bond anchored in divine faithfulness.
The New Covenant is the spiritual reality that the New Testament describes. Foretold by the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah, this Covenant shifted the relationship between God and humanity from one based on a strict written code of laws (the Old Covenant of Moses) to one based on grace, forgiveness, and the internal transformation of the heart through the Holy Spirit (written on hearts - the New Covenant of Jesus).
The Edenic Covenant
The first Covenant that God made was with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
The Adamic Covenant
The second Covenant that God made was made directly with Adam; that included the promise that his seed would crush the serpent's head someday.
The Noahic Covenant
The third Covenant that God made was with Noah and the Earth and included his promise to never destroy the entire Earth again with water. the sign of the Covenant was the bow that he would put in the sky. People call this a rainbow.
The Abrahamic Covenant
The fourth Covenant that God made with man was made with Abraham and it concerned his seed and the promise connected to his faith. Abraham is the father of the Hebrew people. the ancient people of Israel, also called the Jews.
The Mosaic (Old) Covenant
The fifth Covenant God made with Moses and the children of Israel.
The Priestly Covenant
The sixth Covenant God made with Aaron which promised his sons would maintain the priesthood of the people of Israel.
The Davidic Covenant
The seventh Covenant God made with David promising him that he would always have someone in his line on the throne for Israel forever.
The Jesus (New) Covenant
The eighth Covenant God made for Israel which was the New Covenant He promised them, which included His law being written upon their hearts.
