Theology: who is God and how can we know Him?
The God Most High - the Creator - the sovereign - the KING of kings and LORD of lords
The Most High God - there is none like Him!
Deut. 32:8
[8] When the most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel. (the Septuagint translates as sons of God where here it says children of Israel)
2 Sam. 22:14
[14] The LORD thundered from heaven, and the most High uttered his voice.
Psa. 7:17
[17] I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high.
Psa. 83:18
[18] That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.
Dan. 4:17
[17] This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.
1 Sam. 2:2
[2] There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.
Psa. 86:8
[8] Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works.
Isa. 46:9
[9] Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,
Jer. 10:6
[6] Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.
False gods - teeny weenie, itsy bitsy, lowercase gods.
the little g gods
There are other gods in addition to the one true God -- the God Most High. the sons of God that the Most High created were created to watch over men. (they are referred to as watchers in the Bible and in the book of Enoch) When they began accepting worship from men, they fell and became enemies of God, their Creator.
Ex. 20:3
[3] Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Deut. 32:17
[17] They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.
Psa. 82:1-7
[1] God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods.
[2] How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah.
[3] Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.
[4] Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.
[5] They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.
[6] I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.
[7] But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.
Sometimes people create images that they worship. W orshiping images is worshiping false gods, which is also worshiping devils. God made it clear that no one was supposed to make an image for Him either.
Ex. 20:4-6
[4] Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
[5] Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
[6] And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
Num. 21:8-9
[8] And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
[9] And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.
God commanded Moses to make the serpent on the pole. God never instructed the children of Israel to worship the serpent on the pole! Later, the children of Israel began to worship it -- which made it a false god.
2 Kings 18:1-6
[1] Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.
[2] Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Abi, the daughter of Zachariah.
[3] And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did.
[4] He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.
[5] He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.
[6] For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.
Psa. 97:7
[7] Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.
Jer. 2:11
[11] Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.
1 Cor. 10:18-21
[18] Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?
[19] What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?
[20] But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.
[21] Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.
Deut. 32:16-17
[16] They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they him to anger.
[17] They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.
Psa. 106:37-38
[37] Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils,
[38] And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood.
Jesus Christ is God.
Any religious group that denies that Jesus Christ is God worships a false god.
To know Jesus is to know God the Father.
To worship Jesus is to worship God the Father.
John 10:24-33
[24] Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.
[25] Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.
[26] But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.
[27] My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
[28] And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
[29] My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
[30] I and my Father are one.
[31] Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.
[32] Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?
[33] The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
How Can We Know God?
Man can know God by calling upon his son Jesus Christ for salvation. T o know Jesus, the Son of God is to know God.
John 17:1-3
[1] These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
[2] As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
[3] And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
