God possesses a profound, active compassion that moves Him to withhold deserved punishment and instead offer forgiveness, healing, and relief to His creation. mercy is not a passive feeling, but a powerful action driven by God's love.

 

Consider the contrast between undeserved  grace, deserved justice and undeserved mercy.

God's grace for sinful men is seen in him giving man something that he does not deserve. God's mercy for sinful men is God not giving sinful men something that they do deserve.

Exodus 34:6

And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,

Lamentations 2 :22-23

[22] It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
[23] They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Isaiah 38:17

Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.

Titus 3:3-6

[3] For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.
[4] But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
[5] Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
